Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a piece of bread
Hold a piece of bread. Read Exodus 33 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 33:6: “The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 33?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 33 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “Moses said to Yahweh, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people:’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’” Exodus 33 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of…” The line to keep is Exodus 33:6: “The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.” Carry the word “children” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 33:6: “The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 33? Then try this: Read “The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 33. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 33:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 33 and write Exodus 33:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
