Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a paper crown
Hold a paper crown. Read Exodus 30 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 30:6: “You shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 30?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 30 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““You shall make an altar to burn incense on. You shall make it of acacia wood.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “When they go into the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water, that they not die; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to Yahweh.” Exodus 30 opens with these words: ““You shall make an altar to burn incense on. You shall make it of acacia wood.” The line to keep is Exodus 30:6: “You shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.” Carry the word “veil” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 30:6: “You shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 30? Then try this: Read “You shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 30. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 30:6. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 30 and write Exodus 30:6 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
