Five-minute object lesson
Prop: two blue scarves
Hold up two blue scarves. In about five minutes, tell the class this: Trapped between soldiers and the sea, God’s people walk through water God holds open. Show the prop and ask, “What does this have to do with Crossing the Red Sea?” Let two children answer. Then read Exodus 14:14 together: “Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still.”” Close by asking one child to say the lesson back in their own words, using the prop.
Story script
God’s people left Egypt at last, but Pharaoh changed his mind and chased them with soldiers and chariots. The people stood with the Red Sea in front of them and fear behind them. They cried out. Moses said, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
God told Moses to raise his staff. All night a strong wind pushed the sea. Water stood up like walls, and a dry path opened where there had only been waves. Families walked through — grandparents, children, flocks — with wet wind on their faces and solid ground under their feet.
The army that chased them could not hold them. On the other side, the people sang. Miriam picked up a tambourine. The song was not “We are amazing.” The song was “The Lord is my strength and my song.”
Some nights feel like a sea in front of you and a worry behind you. Being still is not the same as doing nothing forever. It is stopping the panic long enough to let God be the one who fights for you. Then you take the next step he gives.
Group game
Two leaders hold the scarves apart like walls of water. The class walks through on dry ground, then the scarves drop behind them.
Craft
Paint a dry path with water on both sides and people walking. Write God makes a way.
