Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a seed
Hold a seed. Read Exodus 26 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 26:34: “You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 26?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 26 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, ““Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim. The work of the skillful workman you shall make them.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “You shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.” Exodus 26 opens with these words: ““Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim. The…” The line to keep is Exodus 26:34: “You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.” Carry the word “mercy” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 26:34: “You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 26? Then try this: Read “You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 26. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 26:34. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 26 and write Exodus 26:34 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
