Five-minute object lesson

Prop: a cup of water

Hold a cup of water. Read Exodus 24 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 24:5: “He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to Yahweh.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 24?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Exodus 24 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “He said to Moses, “Come up to Yahweh, you, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship from a distance.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “They saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was like a paved work of sapphire stone, like the skies for clearness.” Exodus 24 opens with these words: “He said to Moses, “Come up to Yahweh, you, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship from a distance.” The line to keep is Exodus 24:5: “He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to Yahweh.” Carry the word “sent” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 24:5: “He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of cattle to Yahweh.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Exodus 24? Then try this: Read “He sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Group game

Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 24. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 24:5. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 24 and write Exodus 24:5 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
