Prop: a cup of water

Hold a cup of water. Read Exodus 10 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 10:20: “But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 10?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.

Story script

Exodus 10 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I may show these my signs among them,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.

Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “For they covered the surface of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened, and they ate every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. There remained nothing green, either tree or herb of the field, through all the land of Egypt.” Exodus 10 opens with these words: “Yahweh said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I may show these my signs…” The line to keep is Exodus 10:20: “But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go.” Carry the word “hardened” from that verse into the rest of the day.

The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 10:20: “But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.

What happens first in Exodus 10? Then try this: Read “But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go.” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.

Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 10. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 10:20. The last child says the whole verse.

Craft

On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 10 and write Exodus 10:20 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
