Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Exodus 8 in about four minutes, stopping at Exodus 8:19: “Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s finger:” and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Exodus 8?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Exodus 8 is a real chapter from the Old Testament. It starts, “Yahweh spoke to Moses, Go in to Pharaoh, and tell him, “This is what Yahweh says, ‘Let my people go, that they may serve me.” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were lice on man, and on animal; all the dust of the earth became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.” Exodus 8 opens with these words: “Yahweh spoke to Moses, Go in to Pharaoh, and tell him, “This is what Yahweh says, ‘Let my people go, that they may serve me.” The line to keep is Exodus 8:19: “Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s finger:” and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.” Carry the word “magicians” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Exodus 8:19: “Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s finger:” and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t listen to them; as Yahweh had spoken.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Exodus 8? Then try this: Read “Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is God’s finger:” and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he didn’t…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Exodus 8. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Exodus 8:19. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Exodus 8 and write Exodus 8:19 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
