Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a smooth stone
Hold a smooth stone. Read Luke 11 in about four minutes, stopping at Luke 11:42: “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Luke 11?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Luke 11 is a real chapter from the New Testament. It starts, “When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “But he said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it.”” Luke 11 opens with these words: “When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his…” The line to keep is Luke 11:42: “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love. You ought to have done these, and not to have left…” Carry the word “pharisees” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Luke 11:42: “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Luke 11? Then try this: Read “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love.…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Luke 11. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Luke 11:42. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Luke 11 and write Luke 11:42 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
