Five-minute object lesson
Prop: a wooden spoon
Hold a wooden spoon. Read Luke 8 in about four minutes, stopping at Luke 8:12: “Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.” Ask, “What does this prop have to do with Luke 8?” Let two children answer, then say the memory verse together.
Story script
Luke 8 is a real chapter from the New Testament. It starts, “Soon afterwards, he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of God’s Kingdom. With him were the twelve,” That is not a motto invented for a poster. It is the first sentence a family hears when this page is opened at night.
Keep going a little further. The chapter also says, “For Jesus was commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For the unclean spirit had often seized the man. He was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters. Breaking the bonds apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert.” Luke 8 opens with these words: “Soon afterwards, he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of God’s Kingdom. With him were the twelve,” The line to keep is Luke 8:12: “Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.” Carry the word “along” from that verse into the rest of the day.
The line worth learning out loud is Luke 8:12: “Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.” If the rest of the chapter feels crowded, hold that one sentence until the room is quiet.
What happens first in Luke 8? Then try this: Read “Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart,…” once more. What does it show you about God? You do not have to finish every verse. You can close the book after the memory verse and still have read the Bible together.
Group game
Walk the room as if you are moving through Luke 8. Every time you freeze, a child says one word from Luke 8:12. The last child says the whole verse.
Craft
On a US Letter sheet, draw one picture from Luke 8 and write Luke 8:12 under it. Send it home as tonight’s reminder, not as a decoration contest.
